CuZn40 (standardized under European Norm EN 12164 / EN 12165 / EN 12167 as CW509L, historically referenced under German DIN W.Nr. 2.0360 / Ms60, British BS 2874 CZ109, or American UNS C28000 "Muntz Metal") is a classic high-zinc, duplex (α + β) structural brass. Formulated with 59.0% to 61.5% copper and a zinc balance, CuZn40 sits at the threshold where the microstructure transitions from single-phase alpha into a dual-phase alpha-beta matrix. This higher proportion of the harder, more rigid beta (β) phase gives CuZn40 elevated tensile strength, structural stiffness, and exceptional hot-working plasticity compared to alpha-only brasses. It serves as a premier industrial standard for heavy plates, extruded architectural shapes, heat exchanger tubesheets, and hot-formed industrial components.
