IS 320 Grade HT2 (governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards specification IS 320: High Tensile Brass Rods and Sections Other Than Forging Stock) is a high-strength copper alloy classified metallurgically as an Aluminum-Manganese Bronze. Formulated on a multi-phase duplex (α + β) matrix, it contains 56.0% to 61.0% copper alloyed with 0.50% to 2.00% manganese (Mn), 0.20% to 1.50% iron (Fe), and a purposeful addition of 0.30% to 2.00% aluminum (Al). Unlike Grade HT1 (which strictly caps aluminum at 0.20% to facilitate soldering/brazing), Grade HT2 leverages aluminum as a potent solid-solution strengthener and grain refiner. The synergistic interaction of aluminum, manganese, and iron significantly increases yield strength, hardness, and resistance to high-velocity cavitation erosion, making HT2 a standard selection for heavy mechanical wear, heavy gear trains, and high-load marine structural hardware.
